Deposit and Claims Policy

Last updated: September 2026

This page explains the money side of a Veyra trip in plain language: what the deposit is, when it comes back, and what happens if something goes wrong. It sits alongside the Terms of Service and the per trip rental agreement signed by the owner and the renter, which are the binding documents.

1. The security deposit

Every booking carries a refundable security deposit. It is placed as a hold on your card at the time of booking. Deposits run from $500 to $2,500, and $1,000 is standard. The owner sets the amount for their vehicle within that range, based on what the vehicle is worth.

You always see the deposit amount before you pay. It is shown at checkout, separately from the rental total, and it is never folded into what you are charged.

A hold is not a charge. The money stays in your account, reserved by your bank, and it is never moved to Veyra or to the owner unless a claim is approved under this policy.

2. Releasing the deposit

After the vehicle is returned, the owner has 48 hours to inspect it and report any damage.

If nothing is reported in that window, the hold is released automatically. Our target is within about 3 days of the trip ending. How quickly the hold then clears from your statement is up to your bank, and is outside our control.

A card hold expires on its own after about 7 days. That is a rule set by the card networks, not by Veyra, and it is the reason the deposit only ever covers the period immediately around your trip. Anything that surfaces later is handled under section 4.

3. Claims in the first 48 hours

An owner who finds damage must file a claim within 48 hours of the trip ending, and must support it with evidence:

  • Time stamped pickup photos, taken before the trip began.
  • Time stamped return photos, taken when the vehicle came back.
  • Photos of the damage being claimed.

You are notified as soon as a claim is filed, and you get 48 hours to respond before anything is finalized. You can accept the claim, or contest it and put your own explanation and photos on the record.

Where damage is verified and caused by the renter, the cost is taken from the deposit, up to the responsibility cap in section 5. Any remaining hold is released.

Normal wear and tear is not chargeable. Light surface marks, tyre and brake wear, and the ordinary ageing of a vehicle are the owner's cost of doing business, not yours.

4. Later claims

Some costs only appear weeks after a trip: a toll, a parking ticket, a camera violation, or damage that was genuinely not visible at return. By then the deposit hold is gone.

These are charged to the card you saved for the trip, not to the expired hold. You authorize that in the per trip rental agreement you sign before pickup.

An owner may bring a later charge for up to 90 days after the trip ends, and must attach proof: the citation, the toll notice, the repair documentation. You are notified with that proof, and you get 48 hours to dispute before your card is charged. Later charges are limited by the same responsibility cap.

5. The responsibility cap

Every trip carries a maximum: the most you can be charged in total for that trip, whatever happens. It is shown to you at booking, before you pay. The current platform cap is $3,000, and it is never lower than the deposit held for your trip.

Everything counts against that one number: deposit deductions and later charges together. When the cap is reached, nothing further can be charged through Veyra for that trip.

The cap limits what Veyra will charge you. It does not, by itself, limit what an owner or an insurer may be entitled to claim under the law or under your own insurance policy.

6. How we keep it fair

Three things are true of every single charge on Veyra:

  • It requires evidence. No evidence, no charge.
  • You are notified before it is finalized, with that evidence attached.
  • You get a window to dispute it, and a disputed charge is reviewed by Veyra with both sides in front of us.

Owners cannot enter free form amounts. Claims are itemized into set categories, each with a limit, and larger amounts always go to review before anything moves.

7. What Veyra does and does not do

Veyra is the platform. The rental itself is an agreement between the owner and the renter. We facilitate and enforce this policy through the per trip rental agreement, the deposit hold, and the review process described above.

We do not guarantee any particular outcome in any claim or dispute, and we do not own or rent the vehicles. Every trip includes trip protection arranged by Veyra, and the process on this page is how it is applied. Where a dispute cannot be resolved through that process, it remains a matter between the owner and the renter under their rental agreement and applicable law.

The windows and limits on this page are platform settings and can change. The version in force for your trip is the one shown to you at booking and in your rental agreement.
